Differential
Assesment Laws
Every
state except Michigan has differential assessment laws. In Tennessee
it is known as Green Belt. These laws improve the economic viability
of farming by reducing the amount of property taxes that farmers have
to pay. They direct the local government to assess
agricultural land at its value for agriculture, instead of its full
fair market value. Since higher taxes eat up profits, and lack
of profitability is a major motivation for farmers to sell land for
development, differential assessment laws help to protect the land
base.
