Reasons
to Be In an Ag District:
It provides a process for the recognition of lands dedicated to agricultural
production in Tennessee and promotes pride and community interest
in the preservation of farmlands.
____________________________
It Provides a formal voice for each farming community that can unite
the land owners together and collectively increases the awareness
of Agriculture in the county.
____________________________
If a farm in an Agricultural District receives a notice of condemnation/eminent
domain, the local Soil Conservation District can be requested by the
landowner to to hold a public hearing to review the project's impact
on the property.
____________________________
Was created in 1995 by the Agricultural District and Farmland Preservation
Act.
____________________________
This program will most likely improve and develop as most of the other
14 states that have Agricultural District laws have. If
this happens, these districts will become the stepping stone for other
incentive based permanent land protection tools like conservation
easements. Landowners would be required to be in a district
before being eligible to receive federal funds, tax breaks and other
incentives.
____________________________
There is no personal or public cost to start or be a member of an
Agricultural District.
____________________________
Inclusion in an Agricultural District is entirely voluntary.
____________________________
Landowners can withdraw from the program at anytime.
____________________________
Roads signs can be erected to promote the entrance into a Agricultural
District.
____________________________
Each district is established for a period of five years and can be
renewed every five years.
Requirements:
Each landowner has a minimum of 15 acres
____________________________
Collectively the district is contiguously connected and contains a
minimum of 250 acres
____________________________
All the landowners within the district must fill out a simple Farm
Information Form that provides information on farm production, number
of acres and percentages of woodland, crops and pasture.
____________________________
Submit a petition to the local Soil Conservation Board of Directors.
The petition should also contain topographical, soil and tax maps
of the entire proposed district. The local NRCS office
can help supply the land maps and the tax assessors office can help
find the tax maps.
