Discovering Nature, Saddles and Solitude in an Old Abandoned Tennessee Farm

From a Rocking Chair (by Sharon)

This week has been hot. The heat index has been in the double digits and even the thermostat on the shaded back porch has been around 90 degrees. Today we have had a much appreciated break in the heat with no humidity. I drove home from work with the windows down and kept taking full inhales of the smells of summer. Back home I changed into shorts, poured myself a nice cold drink and parked it right on the porch in my favorite rocker. I sat there in the quite and began watching how nature is steadily alive and moving around me. At first everything's peaceful. The grass looks like a soft green carpet stretched out for miles. Butterflies flit around soundlessly drinking the sweet nectar from the colorful Zinnias and Marigolds that border the porch. Two hummingbirds give chase to the feeder that hangs from a corner of the porch roof. Tranquil, peaceful, relaxing....Lookout!! Hummingbird wars!

These little dudes can get viscous. They dart back-in-forth as they dive bomb each other. At first I'm smiling, thinking how cute and then realize that they are after my plum pudding toe nail polish. Now I don't know about you, but I don't relish the thought of those tiny little needle-like beaks coming anywhere near my footsies. I'm not quite ready to surrender my post at the rocking chair, so I slide my shoes back on and commence to rocking.

Now over by the fence two squirrels are chasing each other around in circles..."its my nut"...."no its mine"..."I found it first"... Then one of them quit the chase long enough to notice me. He came to a complete stop, forcing the chaser to nose plow into his behind, flipping completely over him. What a show! Who needs T.V?

Well, I guess Id better put down my pen for now. The sun is on the descent behind our western hills and David will be home soon. I'm looking forward to dinner and that huge bowl of fresh salsa we made yesterday. I hope in your corner of the world, where ever you are, that you are able to stop every now and then just for a few minutes and watch a bird in flight, a butterfly sit on a flower or maybe just watch the changing colors of the sun going down. God Bless you and yours.
