(October)
Woke up, slipped on my boots, shuffled into the kitchen and flipped
on the coffee pot. The magnet tug of the warm bed was pulling hard,
but I fought the "bed devil" and walked out into the cool morning
mist. I sat on the porch sipping java, listening to the birds waking
up. "It's going to be a great day" I thought to myself. As the sun
began filtering through the last shades of night, I stood up, smiled
real big and walked back inside to loosen the grip the bed devil had
on my lovely sleeping bride.
We walked down to the farmhouse together and decided that today we
would be rock masons. Since we began the restoration we've been gathering
rocks and stones with character to be used to face the old fireplace.
We've been working on the facing for the last week, building one layer
at a time. Today we lifted and set into the place the last layer and
the old barn rafter beam mantle. We sat in the rocking chairs on the
farmhouse wrap around porch and ate lunch while watching some of the
horses graze the last of the summer green. We found ourselves stretched
out in the afternoon sun counting clouds, listening to the many different
songs of the blue jay. We later brought the rocking chairs into the
farmhouse and pulled up in front of our restored old fireplace and
admired our creation. We cleaned up the tools, closed up the remaining
bag of mortar mix, and began dreaming of our next project...… barnwood
cabinets.
As the sun fell behind the western ridge we were standing out in the
gardens collecting Zenias, Cosmos and flower seeds. I still had the
smells of the wildflowers drifting in and out of my senses as I slipped
off my boots, rolled into bed and snuggled next to my sleeping bride.
