With
over 300 head of Beefalo spread across several farms and the rugged
terrain of the Cumberland Mountain foothills separating the herds,
there is only one way to roundup these cattle....on horseback!!
There is usually a spring round up in late April and another roundup
in October. The drives and working the cattle usually takes a little
over a week during each season to work through the entire herd. In
the spring all the new calves are brought in and matched up with their
Mom's. We send them through the chute, give them identification tags,
immunization shots, a pat on the butt and send them back into the
green pastures. Occasionally there will be one or two youngsters too
feeble to make the entire journey over the hills and ends up catching
a ride up in the saddle with one of us. And there's always the rebel
who decides to break from the group and make his own path.
In the fall the roundup tends to be somewhat more challenging since
everyone is a little bigger now and full of summer grass. This time
in the chutes we dehorn, brand and replace any lost tags. When we're
done the cows are brought back to the fields and the calves are moved
to their own pasture for a couple weeks, where they learn to live
without Momma's milk. There are always friends and neighbors that
show up during these weeks to join in as well as friends of friends
and folks that are driving through. By the end of the day everyone
has made new friends, becomes a little bit closer and has plenty of
saddle stories to share as we sit around the BBQ enjoying our Beefalo
hamburgers.
